KDHE Approves Engineering Design for 29th & Grove Groundwater Cleanup

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) recently announced the approval of engineering designs for groundwater cleanup systems at the 29th & Grove Site in Wichita.

Aug 26, 2026

KDHE has approved Union Pacific Railroad’s engineering design drawings for systems that will be used to clean contaminated groundwater at the 29th & Grove Site. The approval is an important step in the ongoing groundwater cleanup process.

According to KDHE, Union Pacific will put the construction project out for bid and select a contractor. Before construction can begin, the contractor will need the required permits, supplies, materials, and equipment. Union Pacific is also awaiting KDHE approval of permits related to releasing treated groundwater into Chisholm Creek.

The planned cleanup systems include new groundwater extraction and injection wells, treatment buildings, and underground pipelines. KDHE will host an open house on September 12, 2026, where community members can learn more about the systems and the progress of the cleanup project.

While groundwater cleanup continues, free health testing is available for people who may have been exposed. Anyone who lived, worked, went to school, attended church, or spent time near the 29th & Grove area from the 1970s to today may benefit from testing. Free health testing is available through Clearway Testing partners through December 31, 2026.
